I love lists! My mind is constantly running. I am always thinking of new projects I want to work on and all the things I need to do. Making lists is like therapy for me. It quiets my hyperactive mind. So here is my list of home improvement projects I hope to accomplish this year. I have included pictures that inspire me and links to my Pinterest boards.

Ella's and Maeve's bedrooms both need:
Widen Opening to Kitchen & Dining Room
I love to entertain! Most holiday events are held at our home. There is nothing better than having my friends and family around sharing food, drinks and laughs. After living in this home for 6 years we have realized its shortcomings when it comes to entertaining. Whenever we have people over they end up in the kitchen surrounding our tiny island. It's tight and awkward. While we like an open concept, we don't want our first floor to be one giant room either. After much debate about how to remedy this problem, I came up with the idea of just widening the opening. This way people not only have more room when standing at the island, but our dining room then becomes part of the kitchen. This also gives me an opportunity to infuse more character and some wood! I'm thinking of doing a faux beam.
When we first moved in we bought a butcher block cabinet from IKEA to use as an island. It's not pretty but it works (sort of). The kids eat breakfast at it and do homework there, but it has no overhang so it's a little awkward. My hope is this will be the start of a slow but steady kitchen remodel.
Our house does not have a mudroom. That means all the snow clothes and muddy shoes come through the front door. The original plan had been to put hardwood flooring throughout the first floor but after an incident with a spill that went unnoticed overnight, we realized this was not a good idea. The prefinished flooring we have been using allows water to get into the cracks and causes the wood to swell. We decided tiling the front entry was the best solution. That's ok because I love to tile!
Finish Hardwood Flooring on 1st Floor
We are using solid wood oak flooring by Bellawood from Lumber Liquidators. It is by far one of the best improvements we have made to our home. It's beautiful and durable and doesn't show dog hair and dirt like the dark flooring we had previously. Here is the link to the flooring we are using.
This is my labor of love! We moved the coat closet from the back of the house to the front of the house in what was the center hall, closing it off. We were left with a space behind the closet. The perfect place to make a dry bar! It's between the kitchen and the sliding glass door that leads to our deck so it is ideal for entertaining.
When we opened up our living room to our family room, we began to use our fireplace. It was in the small back family room we rarely used. It was really nice to have the fire and we enjoyed a few fires before we realized the previous owners had capped the chimney and all the smoke was going into the chase. It needed a facelift but now it also needs a gas insert. I am all over the place when it comes to ideas for the façade. Here are a few pictures of some of the ones I like.
Trim Doors in Living Room
I love how trim can change a space. Unfortunately it's the last thing to be installed. Flooring first! Now that the living room flooring is installed we can go ahead and put in the door trim. This is really going to give our home more character and make it less builder grade.
I feel terrible!!! I have been promising Ella a tree house for years. Now Maeve keeps asking for one too. Ella is getting to the age where I probably should be burning a tree house down, never the less building one. But I promised her and I really want the girls to have one. We bought this house because it gave the kids their own woods to play in and I think a tree house would be the perfect addition to our property.
We need a new roof. Not a very fun or exciting home improvement. Maybe that's why I have been holding off on this one until absolutely necessary. Besides my husband is not keen on me doing it myself as the back of our hose is three stories up. He hates heights and so wants nothing to do with this project. I think he is also concerned I may die trying to do it myself. At the very least I will be doing the garage roof.
Faux Beam in Mom's Space
I have been trying to come up with a way to cover the support beams. The joist hangers were installed haphazardly and are very uneven making it difficult to drywall over. There also is the steel lally column I need to cover. In our last house we dry walled over it, but it always looked like something we were trying to hide. So I decided why hide it, make it beautiful! It is also going to add to the character of our home. I'm am going to create a wooden faux beam and support and stain and distress it to look like it was always there. Instant farmhouse charm!
Chicken Coop Addition
I want to give our hens a safe space to spread their wings. As it is now they have an enclosure, but I feel they could use more space because we are not giving them free run of the property as often as we use to. We LOVE our chickens and its just not safe for them to be out unsupervised. Recently there has been a fox that continually stalks them. He walks around the coop getting them all upset. Then there was the morning I found a bobcat trying to get to them. We also have hawks flying at the cage occasionally and believe it was a hawk that got our beloved Luna a few years ago.
Organize the Garage
My god we have a lot of tools! Our garage will never see a car. My hope for this year is to get our tools organized. Last year we got a large tool box. I hope that this will provide us with enough space to finally get our hand tools in order. We also have a lot of parts (plumbing and electrical) that I want to sort out so we stop buying things we already have. Besides an organized garage makes me want to build something!
I reserve the right to add to this list... and I most likely will ;)
